THE association of Lord Byron, Leigh Hunt and Shelley, in their production of the " Liberal " affords one of the most romantic stories in the history of Literature. The very thought of prose works and poems, many of them conceived, as Hunt would have us believe, whilst the fireflies flashed among the olive-trees: and written beneath a blue Italian sky, by three such brilliant minds, is in itself, exotic. Add to this the happy drearnings and anticipations for the future, of two of the collaborators, and then realise that within a short week of their meeting relentless death would intervene. Think of Hunt, out in a foreign land, with a wife and seven children to support, banking all his hopes and all his future on the success of a literary venture that was, to say the least of it, calculated to bear across the seas to England as voluminous a collection of iconoclasm as had ever before assailed her insular pride. Know that Lord Byron was hoping for a considerable share of glory from a periodical that was to be run at his dictation, without incurring any undue effort on his part, and then realise that, at the very first venture, his hopes were doomed to disappointment; and you have the whole ingredients for a literary sensation. That there was a sensation there is no doubt, from the various contemporary critiques, but, in as xneteroric a manner as it lived, so did the journal die, bearing with it to its untimely grave the ruined hopes of its progenitors, until now its name conveys but little to the minds of the many. Therefore, to this short history of the " Liberal ", I have added such poems and essays as are necessary to give the reader an idea of it style. Such well known pieces as "Byron's Vision of Judgment ", " Heaven and Earth " and " Morgante Maggiore " which may be found in almost any edition of his collected works, are omitted ; as also are Hazlitt's three essays, for the same reason. Such spiteful pieces as, " Epigrams on Lord Castlereagh " and Southeogony " are not inserted for their literary merit, but to give an idea of Byron's ultra satiric style. The " Letters from abroad " are Leigh Hunt's work, and the reader must inevitably imagine that he is perusing a missive from a personal friend, so chatty and so universal is the style. Perhaps some apology is needed for the insertion of Shelley's famous Song, written for an Indian Air, and "Lines to a critic ", but in this matter I must ask the reader to bear with me, for I feel that they cannot be too often reproduced. So then, let us draw back the curtains, and watch the spirits of the actors re-playing the roles they undertook in the flesh, one hundred years ago. Size: 8vo.
