Der Autor, Prof. PierreBertaux (Sorbonne, Paris), gilt aufgrund langjähriger wissenscha…ftlicher Beschäftigung mit der Geschichte und Kultur Afrikas und als ehemaliger Repräsentant der zum französischen Kolonialreich gehörenden Afrikaner im Senat der Vierten Republik als besonders guter Kenner des Schwarzen Erdteils. Er gliedert den umfangreichen Stoff übersichtlich in vier Hauptabschnitte. Zunächst beschreibt er das alte Afrika mit seinen vielfältigen Kulturen und Reichen. Dabei werden die krassen Unterschiede zu scheinbar parallelen Phänomenen im christlichen Abendland des Mittelalters deutlich. Der zweite Teil des Bandes ist der europäischen Kolonisation gewidmet. Der Verfasser stellt die kolonialen Methoden der Portugiesen, Spanier, Holländer, Briten, Franzosen, Italiener und Deutschen dar und zeigt ihre verschiedene Wirkung auf die Eingeborenenkulturen. Afrikas Weg zur Unabhängigkeit, seine Geschichte vom Ersten Weltkrieg bis zur Gegenwart, ist das Thema des dritten Hauptabschnittes dieses Bandes. Am Schluß steht die Schilderung der einzelnen Etappen, in denen sich die Insel Madagaskar von prähistorischen Anfängen bis zur Gründung einer unabhängigen Republik kulturell und politisch entfaltete. Der Leser gewinnt so einen ausführlichen Überblick über die Stämme und Völker Afrikas und deren wechselvolles Schicksal im Lauf der Jahrhunderte. Er lernt verstehen, wie tief manchmal die Wurzeln der gegenwärtigen Krise in die Vergangenheit zurückreichen. ?
