Il racconto storico del primo vol. va dal 1748 al 1796, quello del secondo dal 1796 al 1831, quello del terzo dal 1831 al 1850. Il Pinelli (Roma, 1810-Bologna, 1865), generale e storico militare la cui famiglia era oriunda del Canavese, fu decorato con medaglia d'oro con regio decreto del 9 febbraio 1862 con la motivazione per i soddisfacenti risultati ottenuti col suo coraggio e per l'instancabile sua operosità nella persecuzione del brigantaggio nelle provincie napoletane nel 1861. Egli, scrive Giuseppe Sticca, fu anima della neo-scuola d'Ivrea. Ritiratosi da maggiore per malferma salute, ricevette da Cavour l'incarico di organizzare le milizie romagnole, passò generale e fu Ministro. La sua Storia militare del Piemonte.lavoro di lunga lena, condotto con diligenza ed amore, sebbene non più reggente alla moderna critica, forma il suo maggior titolo d'onore. Manno, I, 3846.
