El padre Pinelli, nacido en Molfeta, Nápoles, escribió dos obras que alcanzaron celebridad en los círculos religiosos. "Noticias de la otra vida y del estado de las almas en el otro mundo", cuya primera edición se hizo en 1608, al año siguiente de su muerte, y "De la perfección religiosa y de la obligación del religioso de alcanzarla", eran una invitación a vivir la perfección cristiana apartado del pecado y temeroso de Dios. La vida, decía el padre Pinelli, está rodeada de tentaciones y es obligación del hombre encararía como un militar siempre dispuesto a vencerlas. Así derrotará al demonio, adversario que ronda como león rugiente, buscando a quien tragar. Súbitamente el hombre toma conciencia de su condición de pecador y mira hacia Cristo como modelo de virtud. La salvación se convierte en una especíe de obsesión; a toda costa se quiere forzar las puertas del cielo. La lucha contra Satanás, encamación del pecado, orienta la vida de los hombres en los siglos XVI y XVII. En ese ambiente, muchos jóvenes golpearon las puertas de los conventos en busca de una tranquilidad espiritual que afuera, en contacto con el mundo, no podían conseguir. Los colegios de la Compañía parecían todavía más atractivos. Se trataba de una Orden joven, recién fundada, llena de vitalidad y que invitaba a vivir la devoción cristiana combinando la espiritualidad con la acción. (Jorge Pinto.).
