Stefano De Caro, Annie Jacques, Laura Mascoli, Pierre Pinon, Georges Vallet, Fausto Zevi, editors. Pompei: gli architetti francesi dell'ottocento. [Pompeii: The French Architects of the 19th Century] École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, 1981. Softcover, published without jacket. Condition: VG. Crease in lower corner front cover; other corners sharp; spine slightly sunned. Broad octavo (8.75"W x 9.0"H); 373 pp. Cover shows reconstruction of section through the sanctuary of Apollo at Pompeii, drawing with watercolor by Léon Jaussely, 1910. Binding sound; clean copy, no markings. Text in Italian. *** From 1674 to 1968, outstanding French artists who won the Prix de Rome were funded to study Classical art in Italy for several years. The architects studied Roman architecture directly from ancient buildings, and drew and painted reconstructions of them that demonstrated their technical virtuosity. In 1981, the most outstanding examples of these architectural works produced on Pompeian subjects during the 19th and early-20th centuries were curated into a museum show, displayed in Paris and Rome during that year. This book is the catalog of that show. Copiously illustrated with hundreds of color and b/w reproductions of the original works. Text includes background on the Prix de Rome and its recipients, the Académie de France de Rome, the works produced annually by the artists ("Envois de Rome"), and descriptions and historical notes on the exhibits in the show. Text in Italian.

L'auteur était très lié avec Nicolas de Bourbon, poète émérite et son contemporain. L'ouvrage comprend le poème De anno romano, le commentaire qui le suit est très instructif et rempli d'érudition ; les varia poemata occupent un autre tiers du livre.
