Folding engraved plan of Longwood House (only plate called for) (illustrator). A complete eight-volume set of the 1824 Paris reimpression of Las Casesâ monumental Mà morial de Sainte-Hà là ne. This work, recording Napoleonâs words and thoughts during exile at St. Helena, was first published in 1823 and quickly became one of the most influential Napoleonic texts of the 19th century. Las Cases, Napoleonâs companion and secretary, meticulously noted the Emperorâs conversations, reflections on history and government, and personal recollections, presenting him to the world as a tragic, heroic figure. This 1824 edition, issued with ânombreuses corrections et additions,â solidified the Mà morial as the foundational text of the âNapoleonic legend.â Of special interest is the folding engraved plan of Longwood House (Napoleonâs St. Helena residence), present and intact here. Bindings are uniform in quarter cloth with marbled boards, spines decorated with gilt floral devices and contrasting labels. The set remains in sound condition, appealing for its completeness and survival in unrestored contemporary bindings. Complete 8-volume 1824 Paris edition of Las Casesâ Mà morial de Sainte-Hà là ne, with the folding plan of Longwood House present. A cornerstone of Napoleonic literature, shaping the legend of the Emperor in exile. Good. Eight volumes complete, with the folding plan of Longwood House present. Contemporary bindings show wear: spine cloth rubbed and faded, labels chipped with partial loss, corners worn, boards scuffed. Bindings firm overall. Interiors with some scattered foxing and toning, but generally clean and legible; the folding plan crisp with only light handling creases. A complete and uniform set, unrestored, retaining its period character. Contemporary quarter cloth with blue marbled paper boards; spines with gilt ornaments and contrasting leather title labels; red-sprinkled edges. Uniform 8-volume set 1824 Reprint Edition (corrected and expanded).

A beautifully illustrated colour manuscript Meiji period "house geomancy" ?? plan, folded, scale 1:50. On heavy good quality Japanese paper. Pop-up walls, gate and some buildings, turnable geomantic compass. Some creasing, light soiling or browning but generally very good. 179 x 95cm. House divination originated in ancient China and became popular in Japan from the 19th century on. The idea of the house divination remains popular in Japan to this day. This beautiful sheet gives a detailed floor plan of a traditional Japanese house designed for a person of high status. This house was possibly on the grounds of Tenshindo? in Yamanashi, (near Tokyo)as Tenshindo? is mentioned in the text. The 24 red lines which represent 24 hexagrams diverge from the central movable paper geomantic compass indicating 24 directions. The geomantic compass, its range taking in the entire plan, enables the planner to be certain that rooms and objects will be placed in such a way as to benefit the residents. By the same token the compass serves to make sure that planning does not work to the detriment of the residents.

Very good. Original platemark visible. Blank on verso. Dark clean impression. Size 9 x 7 Inches. This is a fascinating example of the 1791 Barbie de Bocage plan of a typical residence in Ancient Greece. Based on the design of the Roman architect Vitruvius, it features a key at the bottom identifying each room as belonging to the 'Apartment of the woman' or the 'Husband's Apartment.' Prepared by M. Barbie de Bocage in 1791 to illustrate the Travels of Anacharsis . Anacharsis was a Scythian philosopher who travelled from his homeland on the northern shores of the Black Sea to Athens in the early 6th century BCe. Apparently he made a great impression on the Greeks, who considered him a forthright, outspoken 'barbarian. He is considered a forerunner of the Cynics.
