First edition (1638) of the French translation of Pliny the Younger's Panegyricus ? the famous speech delivered before the Roman Senate in the presence of the Emperor Trajan in AD 100, the only surviving example of its kind from the High Roman Empire. Translated by Hippolyte-Jules Pilet de La Ménardière (1610-1663), published by Antoine de Sommaville, Paris, with royal privilege. Title page with engraved medallion portrait of Trajan (IMP. TRAIANO AVG. GER. DAC. P.M. TR.P. COS. IIII). Exceptional double provenance of Franco-Russian interest: (1) manuscript ownership signature "Rochet" appearing twice on the title page, consistent with a French owner of the 17th-18th century; (2) manuscript inscription in Russian cursive script on the front flyleaf reading "?? ?????????? ?????? ?????????" ("From the library of Andrei Tolmachev") ? a Russian owner of the 18th or early 19th century, documenting the book's passage from France to Russia. Binding: contemporary marbled paper boards, heavily worn with joint separations and losses. Title page intact with some soiling. Interior condition to be verified and described before listing.

Couverture rigide. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] First edition of this translation by Pilet de Ménardière. A title vignette featuring the emperor's effigy (repeated after the preface). Contemporary full vellum binding. Smooth spine with faded red ink title. Visible stitching. This panegyric, as announced on the first page of text, was delivered by Pliny the Younger before the Senate, in the emperor's presence, when Pliny was Consul. In fact, the speech delivered by Pliny was much shorter than this one and it was written to thank the emperor for choosing him as consul; it was only later that Pliny reworked his text by expanding it historically and gave it this title. Some believe that Trajan and Pliny were close from the time of the emperor's accession to power. A translator's preface. * (28) 359pp.
