Hardcover. 8vo. Full brown leatherette with gilt lettering and decoration, dust jacket. xvii, (8pp), 103pp, advertisement. Frontispiece, large foldout map at rear. Fine/very good. Some jacket edge chips; small inkstamped Wisconsin convent name at bottom of title page. Handsome facsimile reprint of the incredibly rare 1839 first edition (St. Louis: Chambers, Harris & Knapp). William E. Petersen introduces this text that fails to sketch out Wisconsin and covers Iowa only. Welsh-American Plumbe (1809-57), ever the entrepreneur, went on to become a noted photographer and publisher. Accompanying this is a 1984 pamphlet, "Photographers of Galena, Illinois" by Stephen Repp: 8vo, stiff tan wrappers, ca. 40pp, illustrations. Near fine. Interesting in that in the 1840s Plumbe established and franchised quite a few daguerreotype studios and galleries in many states, yet he appears nowhere in this study! HOWES P 426 note.
