Plutarch (AD 146-c.120) was Greco-Roman philosopher and historian from Chaeronea. The Parallel Lives paired Greeks and Romans together and forty six of them (twenty three pairs) out of the original forty eight survive, of which these three volumes include thirteen separate lives. Plutarch's work provided important source material for Shakespeare's plays set in the ancient period. The translation was originally made by the clergyman and poet, John Langhorne (1735-79) and his brother, William, with whom he was staying at Folkestone, and was first published in 1770.
