Paul Claudel, Saint Agnès, illustrations by Georges A. de Pogedaïeff, foreword by Jacques Madaule, 1947, no. 20/24/270, Paris, on Presses de Coulouma Printer. Loose gathering presented in a binder inserted into the editing box. Onion skin jacket. Our copy is one of 24 on Arches vellum to feature an authentic drawing (22.5 x 18.0 cm) with charcoal chalk signed by the Russian artist George de Pogedaïeff, two (2) proof states and a black suite. Excellent condition. Our copy, moreover, has attributes additional to those provided in the description of this special series; in addition to the drawing and the black suite, it offers a crossed copper plate of one of the drawings present in the book, four (4) proof states, instead of only two (2) mentioned, all described and initialed by Pogédaïeff, and finally, the book is signed by Paul Claudel, which is not projected in this edition either. Georges A. de Pogédaïeff (illustrator). Signé par l'auteur et l'artiste.…

Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Original drawing of a French Legionnaire along with flamboyant inscription by artist and famed book illustrator Guy Arnoux. Of the printed program, this is No. 122 of 250 copies, all on Vélin du Marais Crévecoeur. Portfolio, in size, quarto, 28.5 by 19.5 cm. Unpaginated, with gatherings and leaves loose, as issued. Three folded sheets, together, 12 pages, followed by 12 leaves, each with a plate, and finally another gathering. Of the dozen plates, ten have color, and of these, six are full color plates, or at least have more than two colors. The Arnoux drawing is spread between two pages -- the final page of the third gathering and the first plate in the series which happens to be his printed illustrated contribution to the program. Arnoux's inscription and illustration are rendered in a thick black pencil. The Legionnaire is rendered in quarter profile. Behind him is a scribbled Legionnaire flame emblem -- the emblem is ubiquitous throughout the program, of course. The drawing is a complement to Arnoux's dramatic stylized Arc de Triomphe, the unknown soldier and flame vignette centered under the arch, its rich coloring a magnet to the eye. Arnoux made yet another contribution to the program -- one of the other color plates, this one, sponsored, it would seem, by a Parisian restaurant. The artwork is of a decidedly chunky manchild seraph, sporting a hat and scarf and nothing else. It is really the only illustration in the program to have perhaps a touch of whimsy. Yet the other plates, all sponsored by one business or another, celebrate the Legionnaires in all different ways and styles. Leatherette band serving as spine we assume replaced paper. The rest of the outer folder has moderate wear and soiling. Within light wear. Light card with leatherette spine band. Guy Arnoux, Hervé Baille, Bérard, Ray Bret-Koch, Paul Colin, Dignimont, Élisabeth Gross, Claude Lepape, Georges de Pogedaieff, Touchagues. (illustrator). …

Paris, unpublished, ca. 1930. Oblong cardboard (35.8 x 44.7 cm). Gouache, watercolour, and pencil, heightened with silver. = An original design by the great illustrator, set and costume designer, painter and poet, Georges de Pogédaieff (Grigory Anatolyevich Pozhydaev - or Pozhidaev) (1897-1971). Artnet gives the following timeline: 1913, student of A. Arkhipenko and N. Kasatkin in the Moscow Art, Sculpture and Architecture School; 1918, worked as designer in St Petersburg; 1918-1919, joint exhibitions with Goleyzovski in Moscow; 1920, emigrated to Berlin, Germany; 1922, personal exhibition in Berlin; 1924, exhibited in the Neue Gallery in Vienna; 1946, exhibited in Paris Gallery L. Reimann; 1955, exhibited in Paris Gallery Margueritte; 1930-1971, lived and worked in Paris, France (until his death in 1971). De Pogédaieff is best known for his work as a theatre set designer and costume designer, and for being a portrait painter: his portrait of Nathan Altman was sold at auction in 2014 for £37,500. His designs were commissioned by the Bolshoi Theatre, and, after the Russian revolution, leading theatres in Berlin, Vienna, and Paris. The current design shows three costumes, for two sylvan spirits and a dryad, clad in leaves. The signature in the top left corner is Pogédaieff's. This is possibly a design for a ballet production of Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Le Coq d'Or [The Golden Cockerel]; circa 1925-27, as noted in a Parke Bernet catalogue. Board a bit toned, but the colouring of the illustrations fresh and vivid. A very good unique item. …
