This book transports readers to the vibrant, sprawling Chicago of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a time of immense social and economic change. It delves into the cultural life of the city's Jewish community, chronicling its growth, challenges, and achievements. The author offers a unique perspective on the Jewish experience in America, focusing not only on the struggles of recent immigrants but also on the burgeoning cultural movements that emerged within the community. This book provides a fascinating account of the Jewish immigrant experience in the United States, highlighting the cultural and spiritual forces that shaped their lives. From the establishment of synagogues and libraries to the rise of Jewish radicalism and philanthropic endeavors, the author vividly portrays the diverse threads that wove together a tapestry of Jewish life in Chicago. The author's insights into the tensions between different Jewish groups, particularly the early German Jews and the newly arriving Eastern European immigrants, provide a nuanced understanding of the evolving Jewish identity in a rapidly changing world. Ultimately, this book reveals the resilience and adaptability of the Jewish community, demonstrating how even in the face of hardship and prejudice, they sought to preserve their heritage and build a vibrant future. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

First Edition. 423 p, dark red cloth binding measures 9.5 x 6.25", 8vo. In good condition. Boards normally scuffed at edges and corners. Head and tail of spine scuffed. Normal toning in margins. Philip Pollack Bregstone (1866-1934) was born on December 31, 1866 in Weiwery, a town across the river from Kaunas, Lithuania, where he received a general education and preliminary legal training. The family name was originally Bregshtein. He emigrated to the United States while still a boy and began his writing career at age 21 when he became a reporter for the first of a number of Chicago newspapers, both English and Yiddish. Bregstone and his wife, Anne Rosenberg Bregstone, were active in Jewish affairs in Chicago. They were especially active in World War I war bond campaigns, and Mrs. Bregstone inaugurated tag days for persons who made monetary contributions. Mr. Bregstone also organized Zionist groups in the Middle West and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to promote the idea of a Palestinian homeland for Jewish peoples. Meanwhile, he wrote many articles about literature and several books In Shturm von Leben, which was published in Yiddish in 1924; Chicago and Its Jews, which was published in English 1933; and Sins of Youth, which was never published. Bregstone received much recognition during his lifetime for his literary efforts. He died on February 9, 1934 in Chicago. First Edition. RAREA1933ABDA - 07/18 FORN-TUB-0086-BB-2507-HKREV1116.
