Eugen Pollak (1890- was born on 12 June 1890 in Bielitz, Silesia (now Bielsko-Biala, Poland). As a medical student in 1912, he began working on the neuroglia at the Neurological Institute under Heinrich Obersteiner and Otto Marburg. One of his first publications dealt with glia staining techniques. After obtaining his M.D. degree, he specialized in neurology and psychiatry at the University Neuropsychiatric Clinic under Julius Wagner-Jauregg, and became a demonstrator (1915-1916) and assistant (1919-1925) at the Neurological Institute. In 1924, he earned his habilitation and became Privatdocent (lecturer) in neuroanatomy and neuropathology. He joined the Vienna Society for Psychiatry and Neurology as a regular member, and served as editor of the Jahrbücher für Psychiatrie und Neurologie, the official publication of the Society. In 1926, his address in the Society's directory was Lothringerstrasse 16 in Vienna's 3rd district." "The invitation to Pollak to organize a new Department of Neuropathology at the Royal Infirmary of the University of Manchester came from Sir Geoffrey Jefferson (1886-1961), a pioneer of British neurophysiology and neurosurgery. Pollak accepted a position as university lecturer in neuropathology in 1939.
