The second edition of this work, which was originally issued in two volumes. These four volumes are the observations the Baron of Pollnitz made during his late travels from Prussia through Germany, Italy, France, Holland, England an d more. They are told through his letters to his friends and notable members in various courts. The ESTC notes that the translator of these four volumes is Stephen Whatley. Whatley translated these works from their original French into English. To this second edition, the punctuation after 'Flanders' is a full stop to volume I and a comma to volume II. The first volume has 'Black Swan' without a hyphen and volume II with a hyphen. ESTC No. T220401. There is an ESTC entry for all four volumes which is T207534. This has the first two volumes dated 1739 and the final two dated 1740 like our copies. With a half-title to volume III only. Bookplate to the front pastedown of Christopher Hogwood. Hogwood was an English conductor, and harpsichordist. He founded the 'Academy of Ancient Music' and was a leading authority on historically informed performance. With the bookplate of Sir Thomas Clavering, the 7th Baronet. Clavering was a British landowner and MP. Charles-Lewis, Baron de Pollnitz, otherwise known as Karl Ludwig Freiherr von Pollnitz, was a German adventurer and writer from Issum. His memoirs give a great insight into interesting people in his life and his travels. A fascinating eighteenth century travel work. In uniform full calf bindings. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to the spines, heavier to volume IV. Loss to the tail of spines to volumes II and IV. Volume IV is lacking the spine label. Small loss to the head of spines to volumes I-III. A few marks to boards, which are rubbed to the extremities. Both joints to volume I are starting but with the hinges remaining generally firm. Joints to volume II are rubbed with the hinges slightly strained but firm. Hinges and joints to volume III are tender and boards may detach with further handling. Prior owners' bookplates to the front pastedowns, Christopher Hogwood and T Clavering. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with just the odd spots to pages.
