Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. This is wonderfully, unmistakably early-1960s American educational design. The 1961 edition combines vocabulary building, reading and study skills, note taking, critical thinking, composition, discussion, grammar, usage, punctuation, spelling, and sentence construction. Contemp…orary cataloging confirms Language Arts and Skills as Book 11 in Macmillan's English Series, and the series was used as a high-school language-arts program; a contemporary Kansas approved-textbook list specifically records Language Arts and Skills (11) as a Macmillan 1961 title. Visually, the book is a terrific period piece. The teal cloth binding carries a mid-century geometric cover design in white and red, while the rear board has Macmillan's compass/star device. Inside are numerous striking spot illustrations and larger classroom scenes using the limited-color commercial-illustration palette so characteristic of American textbooks of the period: teenagers at a drill press, a student reading in a wire-frame lounge chair, classroom discussions, automobiles balanced on a scale, microphones, books and other snapshots of postwar student life. The copyright/acknowledgments page explicitly credits "Illustrations: Delos D. Rowe Associates. Cartoons: Stanley Stamaty." Particularly charming are the vocabulary illustrations, where rockets, rotary telephones, soda-shop sundaes, fashionable teenagers, automobiles and other everyday imagery turn the book into an inadvertent visual document of American life at the dawn of the 1960s. Condition: Good. No dust jacket, as issued. The illustrated teal cloth binding remains solid and highly displayable, with moderate rubbing, scattered spotting/soiling and edge wear, particularly at the spine ends and corners. Gilt spine titling remains readable and the colorful front-board graphics remain bright. The interior is sound but heavily used as a schoolbook, with substantial student writing, notes, doodles and exercise answers in pencil and ink on the endpapers and scattered throughout the text; several exercises have been completed. Some page corners are creased and there is expected age toning/handling wear. Binding remains firm. The student markings actually work unusually well with this particular book's retro/nostalgia appeal. Rather than an artificially pristine survivor, this is an authentic used American schoolbook whose doodles, grammar answers and handwritten notes preserve the way the book was actually experienced by a teenager in the early 1960s. Stanley Stamaty (1916-1979,) specifically credited here for the cartoons, was a professional American magazine cartoonist whose work appeared in such major periodicals as The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, and Look. His son, Mark Alan Stamaty, later became the acclaimed cartoonist behind MacDoodle Street and Washingtoon. He originated "The Happy Fireman," a cartoon figure that was used in advertisements by the National Insurance Association. He was a member of the National Cartoonists Society and the Guild of Creative Artists. His works were displayed by the guild and other exhibitors. Stanley Stamaty (illustrator).
