Photographs 301st Engineers United States Army" stamped in gilt on the front board. 84pp. Contains 192 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 4" x 6", without captions. Good only album, lacking the rea…r board with curling of the pages with very good photographs with some toning. Lacking a pamphlet (see below). A photo album produced for members of the 301st Engineers United States Army during World War I. While none of the photographs are identified on the album pages, the verso of the front cover has a pocket for a pamphlet which includes captions for each photograph and can be found in digital archives. The men in these photos were involved in the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in France in 1918. The early pages of the album show men posed in full uniform in portrait style images on streets near their base in France. Beginning on page 9 there are reproductions of drawings by Corporal P.E. Cowan which include town scenes, a church, and a German stronghold. Following this are photographs of the ruins of various towns, Red Cross workers, locals, and refugees. Many of the images show structures built by the 301st including roads and bridges. Other photos show German trenches, a downed plane, destroyed military vehicles and artillery, and the destruction in cities and monuments throughout the region. On page 51 the images show the march into Germany with the 3rd American Army which began in November of 1918 and lasted about a month. Images here show townspeople welcoming the liberating army with street decorations and happy, curious children. In one border city a priest is shown giving a blessing to the troops. The album ends with landscape shots of the area and miscellaneous snapshots of the 301st. An excellent collection of photographs depicting an AEF engineering corps during the First World War.
