A scarce Asia travelogue, recording the author's tour of Asia, from Saigon to Angkor, Bangkok, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies, Hong Kong, Japan and China. It includes his account of Bali, of which he writes, "it is one of the few places left which is untouched by the blemish of civilization. The people . are truly children of nature, charming, amazingly simple and vice-free. Here there are no missionaries; no religious bickerings and practically no crime." His pen portrait echoes other titles of the era extolling Bali as an island paradise, including the photography of Gregor Krause, and the American titles, Hickman Powell's 'Bali: The Last Paradise' of 1930 and Miguel Covarrubias, 'Island of Bali' which contributed to a Bali craze. With b&w illustrations and maps. An old bookseller's noter to flyleaf notes, 'Two plates missing', but one is not missing and has rather been incorrectly bound in adjacent to another earlier plate. The missing plate is 'A Japanese nursemaid'. b&w frontis. pp. 255 including index. Wear and marks to boards, tips bumped, page edges discoloured, a remainder mark (?) to bottom page edges. The upper corner of the flyleaf has been torn out. Binding firm, minor foxing, pages else clean, still a decent copy.
