NB : Cet ouvrage est disponible à la librairie sur demande sous 48 heures. * Cet ouvrage fut rédigé par un quaker américain, et selon l'éditeur avant la Révolution française. L'auteur y condamne sévèrement « la fourberie et le fanatisme des prêtres ». L'auteur décida de le publier afin de soutenir la politique violemment anticléricale des gouvernements révolutionnaires. On trouve dans l'ouvrage diverses références à l'Amérique. En outre l'auteur conteste et réfute tous les dogmes de l'église à commencer par la vérité de la Bible et des Evangiles, que Jésus soit le fils de Dieu. Le christianisme et l'ensemble de ses doctrines ne serait que superstitions qui servent l'intérêt des prêtres. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] First edition, the only one published. Bound in red half long-grain morocco in the Romantic style, flat spine with two vertical Romantic tools. Two small wormholes along the upper joint. Minor rubbing as usual, but a handsome copy, notably well-preserved. NB: This item is available at the bookshop on request within 48 hours. * This work was written by an American Quaker, and according to the publisher, before the French Revolution. In it, the author harshly condemns "la fourberie et le fanatisme des prêtres." He decided to publish it in support of the violently anti-clerical policies of the revolutionary governments. The book contains several references to America. Furthermore, the author challenges and refutes all the dogmas of the Church, beginning with the truth of the Bible and the Gospels, and the belief that Jesus is the son of God. Christianity and its doctrines are presented as mere superstitions serving the interests of priests. 286 pp.

(8913) Libro di incerta attribuzione, opera di un Quacchero inglese o comunque di un simpatizzante, indirizzato soprattutto alla "nation françoise" all'i…ndomani della Rivoluzione. L'editore ne annunzia anche "sous presse" un'edizione in lingua inglese, che tuttavia non risulta aver mai visto la luce. L'autore auspica che "Les Amis" possano trovare ascolto e consenso nella Francia rivoluzionaria soprattutto per quanto riguarda la tolleranza religiosa e la liberazione dai dogmi della Chiesa (tra cui il celibato ecclesiastico), dal dominio del clero, dal fanatismo, dalla superstizione. La vera religione è quella interiore, al di là delle differenze dei culti; la religione deve essere svincolata dallo stato e dal potere, e liberarsi da ogni incrostazione interpretativa per quanto riguarda i Vangeli. Auspica poi che in Francia si sviluppi un sistema di istruzione pubblica generalizzato senza differenze di ceto. Cfr. in-12, 286 pp., un f. n. ch. de corrections, basane fauve marbrée, dos à nerfs cloisonné et fleuronné, pièce de titre cerise, tranches mouchetées (reliure de l'époque). Petites épidermures au dos. Unique édition de ce texte curieux, censément composé avant la Révolution par un Quaker américain qui aurait voulu garder un anonymat… absolu, mais dont l'étrange patronyme (Barbier III, 719) éveille déjà naturellement les soupçons ; cet auteur ne semble au demeurant pas connu par ailleurs. L'annonce d'une traduction anglaise de l'ouvrage, que l'on trouve à la fin du volume, semble bien un fantôme : aucun texte correspondant ne semble exister dans les dépôts anglo-saxons.Pour le contenu, il s'agit d'une violente diatribe anticléricale plutôt dans le genre de la prose "philosophique" continentale, dirigée contre l'Eglise catholique et son clergé. Tout cet ensemble de faits laisse supposer qu'il s'agit d'une forgerie d'un auteur français inconnu, complètement investi dans la vague anti-religieuse qui accompagna en France le refus du serment à la Constitution civile. - - VENTE PAR CORRESPONDANCE UNIQUEMENT - LIEN DE PAIEMENT, NOUS CONSULTER.
