"Sales/posting to the USA suspended". Card covers, xxiv/248pp, b&w photos. Light wear to card covers, previous owner's name top right of title page; a very good copy. Harry Pope was a prominent soldier, NDP Party organiser, and economist. "Leading from the Front" is the only memoir to provide an inside look at the Canadian campaign in both Italy (1943-45) and the Korean War. He was a soldier who believed that it was a soldier's duty to find new and different ways of achieving effectivemess in his deadly trade. He deliberately chose a hard path in a profession that has historically mistrusted individualism, experimentation, and the application of intellect to the solution of battlefield problems. Despite his uphill battle against his superiors, however, Pope eventually emerged as one of the most creative innovators in the Canadian Army. In this memoir, published two years after his death, Pope speaks with the cocksure tone of Field Marshal Montgomery; he always knows what should have been done and he doles out the criticism in spades. But, in recounting his experiences as a Canadian platoon commander during the Italian Campaign of World War Two, as a rifle company commander in Korea and as an officer on peacetime service, Pope is as hard on himself as he is on anyone else. That allows him to write freely: "Criticizing myself as I do, I have no reason to be shy of criticizing others". Tactical military historians will find much in this work on which to ruminate.
