A scientist with the Manhattan Project and the Saturn moon rocket project, Bern Porter turned away from military applications of science after the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Turning to the arts, he published poets such as Robert Duncan, Kenneth Patchen and Henry Miller and opened a gallery where he exhibited abstract and surreal art and hosted performance art events.
