Faint foxing along edges and endpapers. Ten folded maps in original pocket affixed to rear. Signed on the front endpaper: "C.W. Heiskell / from Gen Jo E Wheeler / 1889." A rare presentation copy from the Civil War era. General Joseph Wheeler (1836-1906) was a military official in the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and Phillippine-American War. He also served multiple terms as a Democratic U.S. Representative from Alabama from 1885-1900. Colonel C.W. Heiskell commanded the Nineteenth Tennessee Regiment of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The two men likely met during a meeting of Tennessee military officials, since Wheeler served as Senior Calvary General for the Army of Tennessee while Heiskell was in command of a Tennessee Regiment.
