Cloth. Condition: Near fine. Inscribed by General Joseph Wheeler to Colonel C.W. Heiskell, the first edition of Speeches of Honorable Joseph Wheeler of Alabama. (illustrator). First Edition. Octavo, 333pp. Original brown cloth, embossed covers, title in gilt on spine. No additional printings listed. Solid text block, rubbing to cloth, bumped corners, splitting to front hinge. Faint foxing along edges and endpapers. Ten folded maps in original pocket affixed to rear. Signed on the front endpaper: "C.W. Heiskell / from Gen Jo E Wheeler / 1889." A rare presentation copy from the Civil War era. General Joseph Wheeler (1836-1906) was a military official in the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and Phillippine-American War. He also served multiple terms as a Democratic U.S. Representative from Alabama from 1885-1900. Colonel C.W. Heiskell commanded the Nineteenth Tennessee Regiment of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The two men likely met during a meeting of Tennessee military officials, since Wheeler served as Senior Calvary General for the Army of Tennessee while Heiskell was in command of a Tennessee Regiment.
