Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'The Lady of the Limberlost: The Life and Letters of Gene Stratton-Porter' is an intimate biographical portrait of one of the most successful and influential American authors of the early twentieth century. Written by her daughter, Jeannette Porter Meehan, the work chronicles the life of a woman who was simultaneously a best-selling novelist, a pioneering nature photographer, and a dedicated conservationist. By weaving together personal correspondence with narrative recollections, the book provides a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process and the deep-seated love for the Indiana wetlands that inspired her most famous works. The narrative explores the challenges and triumphs of Stratton-Porter's career, from her early studies of birds and moths in the Limberlost Swamp to her later successes in the literary world. It details her unwavering commitment to realism in her nature writing and her ability to connect readers with the beauty of the natural world. This work serves as both a historical record and a tribute to a figure who broke boundaries for women in both literature and the sciences. 'The Lady of the Limberlost' remains a vital resource for understanding the legacy of a writer whose work encouraged a generation to appreciate and protect the wilderness. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible. Therefore, you may see the original copyright references, library stamps (as most of these works have been housed in our most important libraries around the world), and other notations in the work. This work is in the public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 1st edition, 1928. Biography of the celebrated American conservationist, 'open-air' writer, novelist, naturalist and photographer Gene Stratton-Porter, written by her daughter, Jeanette Porter Meehan. Not well known in the UK but famous in the USA, Stratton-Porter is known as 'The Lady of the Limberlost' because of her close association with the Limberlost Swamp in Indiana, most of which was cleared and drained in the early C20 but sections of which are now conserved. Stratton-Porter made 'The Limberlost' the focus of much of her non-fiction and novels. Among her most well known fiction are the two 'romantic nature' novels, 'Freckles' and 'A Girl of the Limberlost'. 369 pages printed on thick cream paper and bound on green boards with gold, gilt lettering to the front cover and spine (gilt lettering is faded on the spine). Pages are rough-cut to the edges. End papers are attractively illustrated with green and purple central floral designs. Judged to be in overall Good+ condition, with aforementioned fading to spine lettering and small rubs & bumps on spine & board edges. Clean, very tidy and tightly bound. A photograph of 'Grace Greenwood' (a favourite doll) is to the frontispiece and 6 other b. & w. photos/illustrations are included in this volume. The former owner's name is written in pen on the front title page. An envelope addressed to 'Mrs E Harvey' and containing a colour, printed Christmas card on folded, textured parchment-type paper from 'Mary McCarthy' is included. 8vo. No dust-jacket. [Additional postage will be required for international destinations]. …
