This book delves into the origins of the leading UK Solicitors' Association, the Law Society, through rare and compelling historical documents found in their archive. Beginning in 1739, when a small group of attorneys formed a convivial association around common interests, such as professional improvement and ethical practices, the book follows the Society's evolution to its 1831 incorporation, detailing the profession's development in the areas of self-governance and protection. The authors make clear the historical context of the association, and the tension between barristers and attorneys with regard to conveyance, but the book goes beyond the Society's administrative history, as the reader is offered a glimpse into the legal, social and political history of the period under review. By placing conveyancing, the legal profession and the development of the Law Society in historical context, the authors have illuminated the profession, and provided valuable information for the study of socio-legal history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
