The text is unmarked, tight and clean. Frontis photo of the academy. Introductory remarks by Joseph Tucker, and Historical Address by Thomas Post, and remarks printed by several local officials. This is sometimes considered to be an early muckracking novel which lays blame for the Mussel Slough…Tragedy in California at the feet of the Southern Pacific Railroad; much of. Original pictorial brown cloth with gilt spine and cover lettering and black illustration of covered wagons. This was the author's first book. This edition contains: Part II, "Bodies Without Souls, Dangers that Threaten Us," which is not in the first edition. This is an early reprint of the first edition (which was published in 1884). Post wrote the popular "Ten Years a Cowboy" in 1886 (but it was titled differently when it was first published). The spine slightly worn with a crack to the inner hinge; usual browning to pages from this publisher; child scrawl (mostly erased) on p 184 and 185). "A cowboy autobiography preceded only by that of Siringo - Howes P500]. A work variously attributed to Post, Tex Bender, and Phil Johnson (hero of Part 1). "Probably the second book written about the cowboy and evidently made the publishers some money, although they were unscrupulous about authorship - RAMPAGING HERD 1819 (also 1181)." Whoever he was, as a cow man, he knew a lot about sheep, and traveling the Great Plains, and, of course, horses. HOWEVER, Wright's AMERICAN FICTION, no. 4352 states the first 358 pages are fiction, but that the section on the Plains is factual. Note: HERD states 14 or 18 plates. I count 34 plates, including the frontispiece and a view of Chicago's Union Stock Yards. Furthermore and notably, throughout there are colored sketches on many of the text pages, "ghostly" images with the texts. Some plates by C. S. Littlejohn. some plates by C. S. Littlejohn (illustrator).
