N.p. ca. 1900-1915. Black lacquer Japanese accordion album 34.5 x 27.5 cm., 4 post cards per page side,51 cards in all, very good, solid, mounted under threads, silk painted pages, cloth spine, some small chips to corners else solid. RARE ! *** *** *** . . . COLLECTION OF 51 EARLY KOREAN PICTORIAL POSTCARDS . . . BEAUTIFULLY CONTAINED IN A PERIOD JAPANESE LACQUER ALBUM . * This is an amazing and superb collection of fifty-one period black & white collotype photo postcards. Each card is slipped under orange threads to hold them in place, the last 4 cards inside the back cover are held down with old silver photo corners. . *** THE SUBJECTS: This collection was probably compiled by a Japanese who was working or visiting Chosen, Japan held Korea. The probable dates of the postcards range from about 1900-a dated post mark of 1912. . The collection covers some great rarities. A double-postcard panoramic view of Seoul, followed by other "bird's-eye views of Seoul, [Japanese] Governor-General's Residence, other government buildings, palace views, temples, gates, pagodas, main streets, parks, prostitute quarter, Keisang beauty, and a good number of women, girls, priest, dress, common people, itinerant sellers, street stalls, sellers, occupations, rural views, the Chosen Hotel & Korean Nobleman. . *** THE ALBUM. The album is black lacquer over wooden boards, typical of the turn-of-the-century -1920's type album. This one is however, very special, in that the thick pages are all silk gauze covered, and then color painted with lovely floral and other designs, then four threads are sewn in place to hold the corners of the postcards. The album has cloth covered pages that match the end coverings. It appears that a new spine of cloth was done at some time. The cover design sows a Japanese Rickshaw man pulling a Japanese woman in a rickshaw before a large Mt. Fuji. All of the painting is done in gold against a back background, with some touches of red to enhance here and there. The faces of the two people are "mother-of-pearl" and the man's face is complete and nice, while the woman passenger in the rickshaw has some loss and about half is present. . *** CONDITION OF THE LACQUER ALBUM: The album corners have lack some lacquer, and there are a few small cracks or bumps and scuffs to the front cover. The back cover has a few small pieces missing from the corners, back by and large in very nice condition. See also above "THE ALBUM" for other condition comments. . *** HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE JAPANESE OCCUPATION OF KOREA: In 1910, an already militarily occupied Korea was a forced party to the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty. The treaty was signed by Lee Wan-Yong, who was given the General Power of Attorney by the Emperor. However, the Emperor is said to have not actually ratified the treaty according to Yi Tae-jin. There is a long dispute whether this treaty was legal or illegal due to its signing under duress, threat of force and bribes. . Korean resistance to the brutal Japanese occupation was manifested in the nonviolent March 1st Movement of 1919, during which 7,000 demonstrators were killed by Japanese police and military. The Korean liberation movement also spread to neighboring Manchuria and Siberia. . *** THE POSTCARDS: Captions in both English & Japanese, found inside of the " " marks, where these marks are absent, there was no caption. . 1. "VIEW OF SEOUL" A very rare double-panoramic black & white photo postcard, showing the old city, with just a few larger buildings, the balance are small houses, the center fold is intact which is quite RARE and unusual to find in such excellent condition.
