Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The first settlers of the rugged wilderness that became the towns of Remsen and Steuben were hearty pioneers, Welsh immigrants, and a famous Revolutionary War hero. The untamed forest of Oneida County proved challenging but not insurmountable for Remsen's first settler Barnabas Mitchell and the noble Friedrich Wilhelm August Heinrich Ferdinand Steuben, who was famed with being the sturdy backbone of Washington's Continental Army and known as the "Drillmaster of the Revolution." The area flourished into a place of farming, manufacturing, business, and religion. Settlers ranged from rollicking woodsmen to large working families to pious pastors. There were so many churches that the lands of Steuben became known as "the singing hills." It has been said that the courage of a Welshman rises in proportion to the obstacles thrown in his path. This book strives to tell their tales through visuals of old Remsen and Steuben. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The rugged wild of the Adirondacks region of New York State has been a haven for sportsmen for hundreds of years. Hunters, fishermen, and trappers have found freedom and solitude in its crisp mountain air and vast expanses of wilderness. The challenge and adventure of the pursuit of wild game in this rough country has established the Adirondacks as a well-known destination for sportsmen. The area is as stunning as it is unforgiving. Winter ice fishermen and hare hunters face brutal subzero temperatures and strong winds. Spring trout fishermen and turkey hunters are greeted by burbling brooks and thawing meadows emerging from beneath months of snow and ice. Autumn whitetail hunters and fur trappers trudge long distances through cooling, colourful, country forest groves and muddy riverbanks. Southern Adirondack Foothills Fishing, Hunting, and Trapping chronicles a less-often explored portion of the Adirondack's history: the non-famous mountain folk who etched out a life of their own design among the pines and ponds of the magnificent southern Adirondack foothills region. Wraps. Condition: Very good. Reprint of article. 1326-1331, [2] pages. Table. References. The Future of Life Institute states that "The most devastating military threat arguably comes from a nuclear war started not intentionally but by accident or miscalculation. Accidental nuclear war has almost happened many times already, and with 15,000 nuclear weapons worldwide - thousands on hair-trigger alert and ready to launch at a moment's notice - an accident is bound to occur eventually. Many nuclear experts are concerned about a war between India and Pakistan, and if one of them were to accidentally start a nuclear war, the resulting nuclear winter could kill 1 billion people worldwide. Moreover, there are signs of the Cold War restarting. The U.S. and Russia are both upgrading their arsenals, which means new weapons and new ways for something in the system to go wrong. The risk of accidental nuclear war is only growing, and barring major initiatives for risk reduction, it's merely a matter of time until our luck runs out." The team of medical professionals reviewed the recent literature on the status of nuclear arsenals and the risk of nuclear war. They then estimated the likely medical effects of a scenario identified by leading experts as posing a serious danger; an accidental launch of nuclear weapons. They assessed possible measures to reduce the risk of such an event. They found that U.S. and Russian nuclear-weapons systems remain on high alert. This fact, combined with the aging of Russian technical systems, had recently increased the risk of an accidental nuclear attack. As a conservative estimate, an accidental intermediate-sized launch of weapons from a single Russian submarine would result in the deaths of 6,838,000 persons from firestorms in eight U.S. cities. Millions of other people would probably be exposed to potentially lethal radiation from fallout. An agreement to remove all nuclear missiles from high-level alert status and eliminate the capability of a rapid launch would, in their view, put an end to this threat.
