Soft cover. Condition: Good. (1903), 84pp. Pictorial wrps. The paper is brittle and toned, the edges are chipping, still perfectly legible. G. In plastic report covers. Jillson RARE KENTUCKY BOOKS, p171 for the 141 page version. See Coleman 3204 for this one. In one of the most famous of all Kentucky cases, Powers was charged with being an accessory before the fact to the murder of Kentucky Governor-elect William Goebel at Frankfort on January 30, 1900. Upon change of venue, he was tried in the Scott Circuit Court and confined to the Georgetown jail for several years. He was actually tried four times, being convicted in the first three, but the verdicts were overturned. The last trial deadlocked. So far as I know, Goebel remains the only Governor in American history to die in office of wounds inflicted by an assassin. After all these years, the evidence is too contradictory and the people involved were too partisan so that we still do not know with certainty who killed the governor.

Through a meticulously crafted analysis of the legal proceedings and the evidence presented, the author sheds light on the dangers of letting political agendas dictate the course of justice. The book delves into the historical parallels between this trial and other notable political assassinations, highlighting the pervasive influence of political maneuvering and public frenzy in shaping the perception of truth and justice. First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: VG. 1st Edition. 490pp, illustrated with 16 full-page plates on glossy paper, including portraits and photographs, brown publisher's cloth with gilt titles at cover and spine, small bookplate at front pastedown, light general wear and soiling, extremities lightly worn, a clean, bright copy overall. A detailed account of the contemporary political atmosphere of KY, and details of the assassination of newly-elected Governor William Goebel, in 1900. The author, who was Attorney General at the time, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for complicity to murder, but an appeals court overturned the conviction. He was tried three more times, twice convicted, and once ending in a hung jury. It has been speculated that Powers wrote the book expressly for the purpose of obtaining a pardon for the crime, which he indeed received in 1908 from then-Governor Augustus E. Willson after serving 8 years in jail. The assassin has never been identified. Powers wrote the book from his jail cells in Fayette County, and Louisville, and includes a few brief but interesting anecdotes of life behind bars. Powers would go on to serve 4 terms in Congress as a Representative from KY.
