Condition: Good. First Edition. Pr?laut behoort met Bayre, Rude en met zijn leraar David d'Angers tot de belangrijkste beeldhouwers van de Franse Romantiek. Tussen 1830 en 1850 veroorzaakte hij met zijn eigenzinnige werk, vrij van modieuze stromingen en oudere invloeden, veel opschudding in de kunstwereld. Hij verkeerde in de re…volutionaire kringen van 1830 en telde onder zijn vrienden veel kunstenaars, dichters, toneelschrijvers en -spelers. Tot zijn hoofdwerken behoren naast portretmedaillons van collega's, acteurs en dichters, het mysterieuze grafmonument Stilte (1842) en zijn meesterlijke uitbeelding van Shakespeares Ophelia (1843). De ontploffing van een kruithuis in de buurt van zijn atelier verwoestte veel van zijn werk, wat ertoe bijdroeg dat zijn oeuvre klein en vrijwel onbekend is gebleven. Als de Delacroix van de beeldhouwkunst heeft hij echter een belangrijke en bijzonder originele bijdrage aan de Romantiek geleverd.
