Tout à la fois art de la mémoire dressant le catalogue géographique des provinces et républiques du Pape, et satire féroce prédisant la victoire de l'Évangile sur le roi Franc-Arbitre, elle a pour auteur Jean-Baptiste Trento, réfugié italien originaire de Vicence, dont l'identité se dissimule sous le pseudonyme de Frangidelphe Escorche-Messes. La Mappe-Monde Papistique se présente simultanément sous la forme d'une estampe et d'une Histoire ou « livre déclaratif » de quelque deux cents feuillets. Formée d'un assemblage de 16 planches gravées sur bois et typographiées par Pierre Eskrich, ou Cruche, ou Vase, la Mappe-Monde proprement dite (135 cm x 176 cm environ) comporte sur son pourtour un commentaire réparti en 133 rubriques imprimé sur 12 planches complémentaires. La construction allégorique est assez complexe : à l'intérieur de la bouche du diable largement ouverte, la ville de Rome, dont la muraille est bien reconnaissable, est livrée à l'assaut des Réformateurs armés de bibles enflammées et soutenus par les « canons de la Parole de Dieu ». Le Purgatoire et l'Enfer, où trône le Pape, sont représentés dans les angles inférieurs. L'édition critique et commentée du texte de la Mappe-Monde et de l'intégralité de l'Histoire est précédée d'une introduction substantielle éclairant la genèse de l'uvre et la personnalité de son auteur, aussi bien que celle de l'artiste. Elle est suivie de l'inventaire systématique des légendes de la carte, au nombre de neuf cents environ, relevées dans l'ordre des planches. La Mappe-Monde est reproduite ici d'après les exemplaires de Sondershausen pour l'ensemble monté et colorié, de Florence et de Londres pour les 16 planches particulières qui la constituent.
