Son utilisation à des fins énergétiques est neutre en termes de carbone et elle est distribuée de manière homogène en grandes quantités partout dans le monde. C'est une ressource respectueuse de l'environnement car elle stabilise le cycle du carbone dans la nature. La biomasse que l'on trouve dans la nature est excessivement humide et de taille irrégulière, ce qui la rend difficile à transporter et à introduire directement dans l'unité de conversion.
