Map
Condition: Good. Gottfried von Prixner and Ferenc Karacs (illustrator). Lipszky, Joannes (János): Mappa generalis regni Hungariae partiumque adnexarum Croatiae, Slavoniae et Confiniorum Militarium Magni item Principatus Transylvaniae. . . [General map of Hungary, the associated parts: Croatia, Slavonia, and the Military Frontier, as well as the Grand Principality of Transylvania.] Archduke Joseph, Palatine of Hungary (Serenissimo Principi Regio Josepho Archiduci Palatino. . .) (A later impression made from the original printing plates created in 1806, with the publication data engraved on the third sheet, and as an important addition, the railway lines were also engraved onto it.) Printing plate edition: Pest, 1806. [Joannes Lipsky] Copy impression: (Vienna, 1860. Artaria & Comp.) 9 + 3 sheets mounted on 9 canvases. Dimensions of sheets 1-6: 485 x 728 mm; dimensions of sheets 7-9: 724 x 728 mm. As a supplement to the map, Lipszky also created distance indicators and administrative-statistical tables; these text tables were inserted directly below the bottom row of the map (to sheets 7-9). Over the centuries, due to framing or improper storage, these text sections were very often simply cut off from the maps, so there are many truncated copies circulating on the market today. Our copy is complete! Total monumental size: approximately 218 x 170 cm. Scale: 1:480,000. The first sheet features an extremely ornate, allegorical title cartouche. Engraved by Gottfried von Prixner and Ferenc Karacs. The map sheets are housed in a contemporary cardboard slipcase with a gilt spine. (19 x 25 cm). On the back of the first sheet of the first page, the publisher's advertisement flyer is pasted, which reveals that the map was likely put into circulation in 1863. Features boundary and administrative border coloring: Blue line: Grand Principality of Transylvania. Yellow and green: Highlight the southern associate countries and special military zones. These mark the borders of Croatia and Slavonia (Croatia et Slavonia), as well as the militarized buffer zone directly controlled by Vienna bordering the Ottoman Empire, the Military Frontier (Confinia Militaria). Red: The counties are outlined, and a thicker red band on the outer edge of the map marks the external border of the entire country (Limes Regni). The first edition, published between 1804 and 1806, is a milestone in the history of Hungarian cartography. This was the first map of the Carpathian Basin based on modern astronomical positioning and geodetic measurements (triangulation). Lipszky built a massive network to collect data, and his work was assisted by excellent scientists such as the astronomer Imre Dániel Bogdánich. Nothing proves the quality of the Lipszky map better than the fact that in the following decades, other publishers purchased the copper plates and reprinted copies from them: Marco Berra (Prague, 1826, 1833, 1849) and Artaria & Comp. (Vienna, 1860 -1871). The later editions are extremely important because they prove that Lipszky's work was so precise and comprehensive that for 50-60 years after its completion, no better, more usable civilian map of Hungary was created. The Artaria reprints are, in some respects, perhaps even rarer in the art trade, as they were printed in smaller numbers for specific needs towards the end of the 19th century. While the image of the map remains that of 1806, the publisher's note under the legend (Explicatio Signorum) reflects the needs of the mid-19th century Austro-Hungarian administration. Its most important value is the engraving of the railway lines. These lines literally form a bridge between the traditional world before the Reform Era and the industrializing, modern Monarchy. Therefore, it was a business necessity for the Artaria publishing house to engrave the latest infrastructural data onto the plates. Although there were more modern maps on the market by this time (e.g., Scheda), the greatness of Lipszky's map and its administrative richness of detail remained unsurpassed.
