Water stain to front and rear free pages and front tissue guard. Minor foxing scattered here and there in the book. Covers are heavily worn and acceptable at best. Interior is in good condition. The author, Orson Squire Fowler (1809-1887) was a phrenologist and lecturer. He also popularized the octagon house in the middle of the nineteenth century. Orson wrote and lectured on phrenology, preservation of health, popular education and social reform from 1834 to 1887.

Frontis illustration with tissue-guard is a portrait of the author. Plain brown wrapper on coverboards may be original to the book. The wrapper is split down the front spine fold. Richly illustrated with engravings; 100 illustrations in total. One illustration (Bacchus on pg. 206) was neatly cut out from book by a previous owner, but is laid inside the book. Edge of text block is marbled. On the title page there is a stamp advertising the services of Prof. F. L. Cavanagh, who provided phrenological examinations. Some gilt decoration of front as well. There is no corner bumping, but some wear with board just showing. Frayed cloth and wear at head and foot of spine. Hinges are solid with light rubbing. Marbled endpapers with matching marbling of textblock edges. Paper of front hinge gutter has parted just showing binding material. Interior text has slightly yellowed with age, clean and tight in binding. Numerous black and white engraved illustrations throughout. Copyright page is legible except for date {18--}. A good copy for it's age. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
