Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The essays discuss continuity and change in Bilad al Sham (Greater Syria) during the sixteenth century, examining to what extent Egypt and Greater Syria were affected by the transition from Mamluk to Ottoman rule. This is explored in a variety of areas: diplomatic relations, histories and historiography, fiscal and agricultural administration, symbolic orders, urban developments, local perspectives and material culture. In order to rethink the sixteenth century from a transitional perspective and thus overcome the conventional dynasty-centered fields of research Mamlukists and Ottomanists have been brought together, shedding light on the remarkable sixteenth century, so decisive for the formation of early modern Muslim empires. A re-interpretation of the sixteenth century as a transition period from Mamluk to Ottoman rule Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The Mamluk Sultanate represents an extremely interesting case study to examine social, economic and cultural developments in the transition into the rapidly changing modern world. On the one hand, it is the heir of a political and military tradition that goes back hundreds of years, and brought this to a high pitch that enabled astounding victories over serious external threats. On the other hand, as time went on, it was increasingly confronted with modern problems that would necessitate fundamental changes in its structure and content. The Mamluk period was one of great religious and social change, and in many ways the modern demographic map was established at this time. This volume shows that the situation of the Mamluk Sultanate was far from that of decadence, and until the end it was a vibrant society (although not without tensions and increasing problems) that did its best to adapt and compete in a rapidly changing world. Social, economic and cultural developments in the era of the Mamluks (12501517) Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Recent research in the field of Middle High German literature has characterised the Chronicle of the Emperors, dating from the midst of the 12th century, as a very interesting experiment in narrating historical events. The volume at hand draws on these insights and at the same time rereads the text in a new context by looking at it from different European and Non-European disciplines. Current reflections on the genre status of the Chronicle of the Emperors, on the presence and the functionalisation of Rome within the text and on the treatment of spatio-temporal phenomena are linked with observations on the perception of dominance in Latin historiography of the 12th and in a Persian epic of the 14th century. Through a structural and thematic comparison with a contemporary work from Sanscrit literature and Japanese narratives about the courts past, the Middle High German text as well as the research dealing with it appear in a new light. Die Kaiserchronik erstmals transkulturell betrachtet Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The history of the great empires in Eastern Europe and in the Near and Middle East was not only marked by conflicts and competition but also by a dense exchange leading to intensive interconnections. From the 16th until the beginning of the 20th century a large number of social and cultural ties between Poland-Lithuania, the Russian Empire, Ottoman Empire and Persia can be found. Supported by several groups and individuals such as merchants, scholars, diplomates, migrants, militaries or slaves a strong exchange of humans, products and ideas were realised. Therefore, transottoman interactive relationships evolved during different time periods and different social spaces. The present volume presents not only a methodical research overview but also transregional ties, which have not been the subject of a systematic historical study so far.
