This book delves into the history of the Washington Pioneer Association, founded in 1883 by pioneers who had settled in the Washington Territory prior to 1856. The association's aim was to preserve the stories and experiences of those who had shaped the region's past. Over the years, the association has played a crucial role in documenting and honoring the contributions of these individuals, collecting valuable historical artifacts and sponsoring events that celebrate their legacy. The book chronicles the association's efforts to establish a permanent home, culminating in the construction of their own building in 1910. Through detailed accounts of the association's activities and the contributions of its members, the book offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the pioneers who helped build the state of Washington. It highlights the challenges they faced, the sacrifices they made, and the lasting impact they had on the region's development. McCarver's experiences mirror the dramatic changes of the early 19th century as America expanded west. He traverses the Mississippi, exploring the new states, then joins an early wagon train to Oregon in the 1840s, becoming involved in shaping the new territory's government. From the War of 1812 to the development of the Pacific Northwest, the author weaves together a compelling narrative of an extraordinary life, deeply entwined with the nation's westward expansion.
