Hardcover. Condition: Good. In Hebrew. 2 leaves only: tet vav and tet zayin = 15, 16. 237 x 190 mm. Yudlov 92. Yaari 60. This segment deals, in full, with the story of the Four Sons. This is the first appearance of the commentary by the Shela'"h ha-Kadosh, R. Isaiah Halevy Horowitz. Also commentaries: Mateh Aharon by Aaron Te'omim Darshan; and Ketonet Pasim by Joseph ben Moses Hadarshan of Przemysl. The Four Sons are the focus of one of the most beloved and intriguing stories in the Paasover Haggadah, the book read and sung at the Passover Seder. It's a short fable about four boys at the Seder table and how they're treated by their father. One is wise, one is wicket, one is simple, and one doesn't know how to ask questions. The fable has been revised relentlessly over the centuries, in words, in art, in music, until it must be right up there with Shakespeare's plays among the most re-interpreted tales ever told. Why so many versions? Because Passover and its Seder are really about passing on heritage, or any belief, to your children. And The Four Sons story suggests how to do that, as many suggestions as there are versions.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. In Hebrew. 202 x 160 mm. [1], 50, [2], 33 ff. Pages are browned and stained. Approximately half the pages are original, the rest are photocopies. Photocopies are: title page, leaves 1 to 9, 25, 28, 32, 44 to end of book One. Book Two photocopies: title page, leaves 1 to 4, 29 to end, with the exception of Lamed and Lamed Alef which are, half of each are orignals. Modern binding. The photocopies were made from the JTSA copy which itself included photocopies made from the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana copy. The Yeshiva University copy is also incomplete. First edition of this multi-part work consisting of introductory discourses to various popular aggadah from the Talmud, midrashim, and Zohar and brief discourses on Talmudic methodology and disputed issues in the Talmud by R. Abraham ben Judah Leib of Przemysl (17th cent.). R. Abraham, who served as rabbi in Ulanov, Galicia, initially intended to publish his father¿s Ez Kol Peri. For that purpose he traveled to Fuerth, but the court factor, Model of Ansbach, persuaded him to instead publish his own book, Petah ha-Ohel. This work is in two parts, each with its own title page and foliation. The first title page states that it is a wondrous work, entirely new, there was not like it under the sun. The second title page is more detailed, explaining that it is on Talmudic methodology and differences and disputes between tanna¿im and amora'im, "studied and researched as has not been done, connected and bound, 'rope by rope' (Shabbat 113a, Pesahim 11a), 'pulled and drawn'" (Bava Batra 86a) . . . "The first title page is dated, ¿And the Lord had said to Abram, Get out from your country, (451 = 1691) and from your family, and from your father's house, to a land that I will show you; [And I will make of you a great nation], and I will bless you, and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing" (Genesis 12:1-2). The second title page has the date, "So I will sing praise to your name for ever, as I daily perform my vow (451)" (Psalms 61:9) R. Abraham¿s introduction follows, informing that the title is from the verse concerning the patriarch Abraham, who '"¿sat in the tent door (petah ha-ohel)' (Genesis 18:1); and I have certainly opened a good opening for those who sit in the tent of the Torah, in order to realize a benefit from this small work" . . . The text follows, ordered alphabetically, in two columns in rabbinic letters. Petah ha-Ohel is based on kabbalistic and aggadic works. An example of the subject matter are the entries for the letter alef, beginning with Adam Vekhava Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel," the entry encompassing the Zohar, tractate Sotah, several midrashim, Yefeh To¿ar, and other works; followed by letters of the alphabet; patriarchs and matriarchs; the land of Israel and the other lands; other nations; and eating, drinking, washing of one¿s hands, and birkhat ah-mazon. The text concludes with an index of verses by entry. In part two, also organized alphabetically, the index of the entries precedes the text. R. Isaac Lampronti (1679-1756) reputedly made use of Petah ha-Ohel in his monumental Pahad Yizhak.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. In Hebrew, with instructions in Yiddish. 7, 45 leaves, for a total of 104 pages. Complete but page numbering is faulty. The final leaf of the second section should be numbered 45, not 52. 237 x 190 mm. Blank margins restored. Restored and rebound by a master bookbinder/restorer. Yudlov 92. Yaari 60. Chiluka Derabanan. With abstract from Isaiah Horowitz's "Shnei Luchoth Habrith," commentaries by Aaron Teomim and Kethoneth Pasim by Yosef ben Moshe Hadarshan [= Joseph son of Moses the preacher] of Przemysl. With approbation of Council of the Four Lands and the chief Rabbis of Amsterdam. Title within architectural arch with typographic surround. Upper margins frayed affecting some headlines, a few stains; some tape repairs. This is the first appearance of the commentary by the Shela'"h ha-Kadosh, R. Isaiah Halevy Horowitz. One leaf has a small area that has been restored. Corrected and supervised by Samuel Texeira. The title, Haluka de-Rabbanan, referring to garments of the soul (robes of the sages) is from a kabbalsitic concept to be found in R. Jacob ben Nissim's (eleventh century) Hibbur Yafeh min ha-Yeshu'ah, often an allusion to the soul's good deeds. The title page, copying the text from the earlier edition, states that it was written by the "great [rabbinic] lights" (Genesis 1:16). They are "more precious than fine gold and rubies" (cf. hakafot Simhat Torah). And all three intended on one thing, and they are as three works that come as one and instruct with aggadic concepts that draw the heart of a man, sweet and desirable: One is Shenei Luhot ha-Berit, another Matteh Aharon, and another the small light, Kattunot Passim. I will bless (bend the knee before) the heart of the sages, tender in years, and honor the name of the author of Matteh Aharon, he is R. Aaron Teomim, darshan and av bet din, Mainz, and av bet din and rosh mesivta, Cracow; and honor the name of the author of Ketonet Passim, rav, great darshan, and dayyan in Przemyzsl, and author of Zafenat Pa'ne'ah he-Hadash, and I will bless R. Joseph ben the pious R. Moses, grandson of R. Abraham Ashkenazi descended from Rashi. . . .
