Volume with light wear and partial offset to feps, very slight bow to boards. DJ with light rubbing and soil, a tiny chip to foot of rear flap. Credited DJ artwork by A. Farquhar Taylor. Originally published in France as L'Affaire Matapan in 1881, this later reprint is an excellent example of an earlier dust jacket being printed in color, to - as Rockwell Kent said "The real purpose of the paper jacket is to conceal the drab cloth cover . . to dress up a sorry article [and] should be arresting, alluring, compelling. ." - this front panel image showing greed in action certainly meets Kent's criteria! The Matapan Jewels jacket is also notable for having used the complete verso as advertising space for the publisher's then currently available titles. The copies digitized by Google Books and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, with the same collation, imprint and date, are of a variant issue with different type setting. The from our copy partly removed leaf (pp. 123/124) contains in the Google and Bayerische Staatsbibliothek edition a very different text with printed marginal annotations, whereas our copy has no printed marginal annotations. Pasquier Quesnel (Paris 1634-Amsterdam 1719), a French Jansenist theologian, was banished from Paris in 1681; he took refuge in Orléans; 1685 fled to Brussels, where he was arrested in 1703; he escaped and settled at Amsterdam. Directed against a work published in 1698 by Louis Doucin (Vernon 1652-Orléans 1726), a French historian and Jesuit theologian. - Two-thirds of one leaf (pp. 123/124) intentionally cut away, probably because of an incorrect text, see explanation above.[(6185)].
