Bel exemplaire. 1 vol. 16to (145 x 98 mm.) of: [4] ff (title, preliminaries, biography, table of chapters), 388 pp. [2 times 348-349 and skip from 349 to 352], [48] ff (index), [1] blank f, 6 full-page woodcut illustrations: opposite pp. 38, 39, 42, 47, 330, 332, one of which is not included in the pagination, engraved initial letters. (Important period annotations in brown ink pp. 53 to 99, section on Europe, minor defects in the paper, traces of light water stains). Full period vellum, spine with raised bands titled in brown ink. (stains and signs of wear). First edition of this Latin translation by Johann Bronchorst (Joannes Noviomagus), based on the first edition of Ptolemy's Greek text (Basel, 1533). Jan van Bronckhorst (1494, Nijmegen - 1570, Cologne), also known as Johannes Noviomagus ("Johannes of Nijmegen"), was a student of the Broeders des Gemeenen Levens (Brothers of the Common Life) in that city. In 1539, he was appointed professor of philosophy in Cologne. He studied in Rostock, where he became professor of arts around 1542. From 1543 to 1544, he was rector and in 1544, he became dean of the faculty of philosophy in Rostock. In 1546, he became rector of the famous Latin school in Deventer. Two years later, in 1548, he married Clara Coster. In 1569, he fled from Alva to Cologne, where he became a professor of mathematics. He is the author of numerous works on educational, philosophical, historical, and geographical subjects in Latin, including this work, published in Cologne in 1540. The work is divided into eight books dealing with Europe, Africa, and Asia, and ends with a large 94-page index. It is illustrated with six full-page woodcut figures with captions opposite. The copy contains extensive contemporary annotations in brown ink in the section on Europe (pp. 53-99). This edition is rare: we have located a few copies preserved in libraries in Europe and none in North America. A fine copy.
