Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition of an anonymous commentary on the 2nd-century A. D. Tetrabiblos by Ptolemy, a treatise on astrology that remained influential into the Middle Ages. Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos is one of the great astrological texts of antiquity, and this commentary or paraphrasis is sometimes but dubiously attributed to Proclus, under whose name it was edited in 1635 by Leone Allacci or Allatius. Also included are an introduction to the Tetrabiblos attributed to the 3rd-century Neoplatonic philosopher Porphyry, and the FIRST EDITION of a treatise on solar returns ascribed to the legendary sage Hermes Trismegistus but actually by the 9th-century Muslim astrologer Albumasar. The text by "Hermes", which begins "Sole nativitatis tempore in loco aliquo" is by Albumasar (Ja'far ibn Muhammad (Abu Ma'shar), al-Balkhi). In Arabic it is called Kitab tahawil sini almawalid (Book of the revolutions of the years of nativities). A Greek version was made of the original Arabic, and of this the first five books survive. These five books form the basis of the Latin version, of which this is the first edition. "Epitome a sectatore Abu Ma'shar saec. X nomine Abu Sa'id Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jalil, al-Sijzi. versio graeca ab ignoto Byzantino exeunte saec X. Haec reddita est Latine saec XIII fortasse anno 1262" writes Professor Pingree in his edition of the extant Greek text (Leipzig: Teubner, 1968). Ships from U.A.E.

Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos is one of the great astrological textbooks of antiquity. Book 1 describes the technical aspects of the subject, book 2 the influences on the earth in general, and books 3 and 4 with influences on human life. The Greek text contains symbols representing signs of the zodiac and planets and stars. A chart explaining the symbols is included at the beginning of the text. The Karpos, a collection of astrological aphorisms, is erroneously ascribed to Ptolemy. In addition to the two Greek texts by Ptolemy, this edition contains the Latin translation by Joachim Camerarius of the Tetrabiblos, the Latin translation by Giovanni Pontano of the Karpos and two short works by Matthaeus Guarimbertus (Opusculum de radiis et aspectibus planetarum) and Ludovicus de Rigius (Aphorismi astrologici). A different Latin translation of the Tetrabiblios, by Plato Tiburtinus, was published in Venice by Ratdolt in 1484 (Goff P1088). - Visit our website for additional images.

Woodcut printer's devices on title-pages and at end of part 2, 64 engraved double-page maps mounted on guards, comprising 27 maps of the ancient world and 37 maps of the modern world with letterpress descriptive text on rectos, woodcut diagrams throughout, woodcut initials (first title-page supplied, and a bit short, some light, mostly marginal waterstaining throughout, front endpaper with wormtracks). Contemporary vellum over paste-board, title lettered in gilt on the spine (a bit marked); preserved in a modern red cloth clamshell box. Most of the maps are enlarged copies of the Gastaldi maps from the Venice 1548 edition made by Giulio and Livio Sanuto: notable maps include: "Septemtronalum partium nova tabula" , a reduced version of the Nicolo Zeno map of the North Atlantic Ocean of 1558 and including many ficticious islands; "Tierra Nueva", a map of the east coast of North America showing the Hudson and St. Lawrence Rivers; "Nueva Hispania Tabula Nova" showing the Yucatan as a peninsula; other maps of America are "Tierra Nova showing South America, "Brasil Nuova Tavola", "Isola Cuba Nova", and "Isola Spagnola Nova"; "India Tercera Nuova Tavola" shows the East Indies; and "Orbis Discriptio" the twin hemisphere new world map, which as Shirley reports, is the earliest of its kind to appear in an atlas, shows not only North and south America, but also the islands of New Guinea. Maps not found in the previous Gastaldi edition of 1548 are: Scandinavia (after Jacob Ziegler, 1532); Brasil (after Ramusio); the Arctic regions; South Africa; and a navigational chart of the World (Shirley 111). Hardcover. 1st Edition. 2 parts in one volume. 4to., bound in 6s (12 x 8 inches). Two vignette title-pages. One full-page engraved double-hemisphere map of the world "Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descriptio" by Girolamo Porro after Rumold Mercator to D1v, and 63 fine engraved half-page vignette maps, numerous woodcut diagrams and vignettes in text including two of the armillary sphere and woodcut initials. Contemporary vellum over paste-board, lettered in gilt on the spine. Provenance: with the 19th-century engraved armorial bookplate of the Bushnell family on the front paste-down. First edition in Italian, edited and corrected by Giovanni Antonio Magini and translated from his Latin edition of 1596, also printed in Venice, into Italian by Leonardo Cernoti. All the maps, 27 of the ancient world, and 36 of the modern world were first published in Magini's earlier Latin edition, except for Girolamo Porro's four small format world maps based on Valgrisi's 1561 edition. The double-hemisphere world map "Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descriptio" is a reduction of Rumold Mercator's world map, and is described by Shirley as 'an exceptionally fine engraving in its own right'. The other three are after Mercator and Ortelius, each and the map of America in chapter XXXIIII (18 pges), show Chili with a distinctive bulge. Ptolemy's Geography, arguably the most influential cartographic account of the ancient world, was the point of reference for all Renaissance mapmakers. His compilation of what was known about the world's geography in the Roman Empire during his time (ca 90-168 ad). He relied on the work of others, in particular an early geographer, Marinos of Tyre, and on gazetteers of the Roman and ancient Persian Empire. He was a Roman citizen of Egypt who wrote in Greek. He was a mathematician, astronomer, geographer, astrologer, and poet (of a single epigram in the Greek Anthology). He lived in Egypt under Roman rule, and is believed to have been born in the town of Ptolemais Hermiou in the Thebaid. He died in Alexandria. The earliest known manuscripts of Ptolomy's "Geographia" date to about 1300. The first printed version was published in 1477, then 1488, and in Ulm in 1482. The present edition, published at the end of the 16th century, reflects the most important discoveries of that era. Sabin 66506; Phillips, Atlases, 405; Adams M-118; Shirley 193-96 and page XXIX. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.

The text exceptionally crisp and clean throughout, very minor occasional spotting confined mostly close to outer edges. An outstanding, tall and crisp copy in its first binding and with some deckle edges still preserved. ---- EDITIO PRINCEPS of Ptolemy's complementary astronomical and astrological works. His astronomical survey, the Almagest, appears here in the first printing of Gerard of Cremona's Latin translation, made in Toledo in the twelfth century from an Arabic manuscript. It contains a star catalogue in books seven and eight which were still being used by Halley at the beginning of the eighteenth century, although Tycho Brahe had already corrected some of the coordinates. Ptolemy also describes various instruments for measuring the heavens. "It was commonly assumed that [Ptolemy's] conceptions could be traced back to an essentially Aristotelian cosmology. As a matter of fact, Aristotle and Ptolemy were in agreement with regard to the sphericity of the Earth and its position at the center of the universe, as well as the sphericity and the circular motion of the heavens. Hence, the physical considerations of the philosopher and the mathematical arguments of the Alexandrine astronomer could reinforce each other concerning these central issues. What is more, the Almagest began with a mention of Aristotle's partition of speculative knowledge into the three disciplines (mathematics, physics and theology) and repeated some physical theories of Aristotle. In this consensual spirit, Sacrobosco, for one, assumed the essential concordance between Aristotle and Ptolemy and could therefore rely on both authorities in his (very) elementary introduction to spherical astronomy which, in spite of its intrinsic scientific limits, was one of the most successful textbooks ever. In Latin Europe, an 'Aristotelian-Ptolemaic cosmology' thus emerged, bringing together elements from both classical authorities. This unified geocentric worldview was assumed by most philosophers and theologians, for instance Robert Grosseteste. In his narrative of the Copernican revolution, Kuhn therefore felt legitimized to talk about an Aristotelian-Ptolemaic 'paradigm' which Copernicus' De revolutionibus was to undermine." (Omodeo, Pietro Daniel and Tupikova, Irina (2016). Cosmology and Epistemology: A Comparison between Aristotle's and Ptolemy's Approaches to Geocentrism. In: Spatial Thinking and External Representation: Towards a Historical Epistemology of Space. Berlin: Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften"). The second work is on the philosophy and practice of astrology, emphasising its logical aspects, and it contains details on the significance of comets and eclipses as well as numerous horoscopes. Burden 29 - 30) u. a. - " . was followed in 1561 by his Italian translation of Ptolemy`s Geography. Its twenty-six ancient and thirty-six modern maps were drawn by Gastaldi and engraved by Giulio Sanuto. The work included Ruscelli`s commentary and a treatise on the practical fabrication of small globes by Galileo`s tutor and professor of applied mathemtics in Padua, Giuseppe Moletto. The verities of vision and representation are a recurrent theme in Ruscelli`s Ptolemaic commentary. Whishing to describe the whole earth on sphere or flat maps, Ptolemy had been obliged to use cartographic signs rather than mimetc images for cities, countries, and events. Ruscelli focuses on Ptolemy`s distinct mode of spatial represantation turn upon realtionships between eye and mind as tools for acquiring knowledge. Globes and world maps offer the means for humans to see the earth as a unity and thus to know it directly. But the visual image alone is insufficient. A text is also required; the globe maker produces an icontext, and Ruscelli compares Ptolemy unfavorably with Strabo as a writer of Regional description" (Denis E. Cosgrove, Apollo`s Eye. Baltimore 2001. S. 147 f.). - Die 24 Bll. Tavola de nomi (mit Errata u.
