Hardcover. Condition: Good. London: Printed for James Duncan, 1826. Two volumes in one binding, 1826, with folding map at front. This copy is particularly interesting as the name Captain Sawyer, U.S.N., London 1929 is written inside the front cover, and H.B. Sawywer, U.S.N. is written at the top of each title page. Captain Horace B. Sawyer served on the U.S.S. Constitution in the War of 1812 (including the battles with HMS Cyane and Levant in 1815). According to the USS Constitution museum, he traveled to Europe in 1829-1831 to consult ear specialists for hearing loss, and this was likely a book that he obtained at the time. In addition to the signatures there is a hard to read inscription in the margin of page 39 that seems to read: Southey is a parasite and a [illegible] and author of this book contradicts himself. At least that what it looks like to us. Small thick volume, three quarter thin red leather over marbled boards, all edges speckled, folding map at front, 4 engravings in volume one, 3 in volume two. Cover rubbed with additional wear to the extremities, corners and spine ends lightly chipped, good hinges, sound text block, closed partial tear to map along one fold line, pages clean, old cancelled postage stamp inside front cover, no markings other than those described. We cannot guarantee that the man who signed the book is the same Captain H. B. Sawyer that served on the Constitution, but it certainly seems to be. Signed by Captain H. B. Sawyer. Hard Cover. Good. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
