Gerson Rosenzweig (1861-1914), was born in Lithuania, he taught Hebrew in Bialystok, and in 1888 he emigrated to the United States. Rosenzweig edited several Hebrew periodicals - Ha-Ivri (1891-1902), Kadimah (1899-1902), Ha-Devorah (1911-12) - they were short-lived and earned him neither fame nor a livelihood. He also edited Hebrew columns in the Yiddish press. Though he was a versifier rather than a poet, he had a genuine flair for satire and he was known to his contemporaries as the "sweet satirist of Israel" and as a parodist he earned an honorable place in Hebrew literature. His Talmud Yanka'i ("Yankee Talmud, " 1907, 1909) poured a stream of ill-humored sarcasm on the peddler, the teacher, the rabbi. The pages of that collection of satires resembled the pages of the Talmud: the text in large letters, wreathed by commentary in Rashi script, is divided into six tractates instead of the talmudic six orders. Rosenzweig also denounced the vulgarisms of the country, the worship of money, the religion of success. Epigrammatic neatness was his forte. Example: "What is the difference between a convert and an anarchist? A convert denies what he believes, an anarchist believes what he denies. " Using a biblical phrase he quipped sardonically about his impending death by cancer of the tongue: "Life and death are at the mercy of the tongue" (Prov. 18: 21). Compiled by Eugène Aroneanu, the creator of the concept of "Crimes Against Humanity under International Law" with the first prosecution under this concept taking place during the Nuremberg trials against defeated leaders of Nazi Germany, as outlined in this work. Includes 17-page list of camps and prisons on pages 113-130, listing the name, location, and type of each camp. This report provides the evidentiary material given to each participant of the Nuremberg Military Tribunal to become acquainted with the evidence to be presented. The report recounts the German crimes against humanity detailing deportation, detention, concentration camps, tortures, medical experimentation, execution, gassing and incineration. It also delineates the web of procedures and complex organizational structure of concentration and extermination camps set up by the Germans during the course of Nazi rule. In the mid-1930s, he emigrated to Paris. When World War II broke out in September 1939, he conducted radio broadcasts to Romania. When France was occupied in 1940, he joined the French Resistance, operating underground under the name Aréne. In 1943, he managed to escape to Switzerland . Aroneanu authored 58 publications. In 1945, he was tasked with compiling a documentation of Nazi wartime atrocities for the Nuremberg Trials. Neat presentaion inscription on the front free endpaper presenting the book to William Bentley, from the members of teaching staff of the Birmingham and Midland institute of Music, dated 16th July 1931. William Bentley (1862-1935) was honorary librarian and a Committee member at the School. In an attractive craft binding of full mid brown morocco. Spine with five raised bands. The compartments ruled and lettered in gilt. Triple blind ruled borders to boards with gilt corner dots. Circular blind tooled centre panels with a gilt harp and birds to the front board and the initials W B and floral devices to the rear. Board edges and turn-ins ruled in blind.
