First published by Blackwell Publishers 1983. Pullan examines the social and political purpose of the Inquisition: its composition, procedures and legal entitlement to judge Jews. He explains the origins of the new Christians of Portugal and the neophytes of Italy, and describes those Christians who, though having no Jewish ancestry, nevertheless were attracted - at some risk to themselves - by the doctrines and customs of Judaism. The state used this religious watchdog to fight not only "contaminating" Jewish influences, but also a phenomenon largely the product of Christian imaginations ~ crypto~ Judaism (considered a heresy) among the Marranos from Spain and Portugal, and other Jewish converts to Christianity. Brian Pullan begins this study in 1547, when the Venetian Inquisition entered a phase of renewed vigor. He shows how it persecuted Jews for discussing religion with Christians and for owning or circulating "heretical" books, including the Talmud; and how its harassment of Jewish "New Christians" drove many of them to seek safety in lavish displays of piety. Ironically, inquisitorial hounding of these converts kept Judaism at the forefront of their minds, and at times even led them to reembrace it. In the case histories Pullan has drawn from the Inquisition's records, the reader meets many distinct individuals~among them a roistering Christian sailor charged with being addicted to Jewish celebrations and courting a Jewish woman, and a globetrotting wastrel who stole prodigiously, gambled compulsively, feigned Christianity in order to hobnob with the Christian elite, but never renounced his Jewish faith.
