Add to basketDecorated Cloth. Condition: Very Good. London: The Office, 1920. January to June, 1920. Profusely illustrated with hundreds of black-and-white cartoons. 10 7/8" x 8 1/2", 520 pp; textured dark red cloth with gilt and black devices, gilt devices being Richard Doyle's iconic Punch on the cover, another variant of Punch at spine top, and his dog Toby at spine foot. Corners and spine ends just touched, not much else to point out; Very Good plus, a sharp, clean copy. By the time of this edition, the World War II cartoons and humor which had so liberally seasoned the closely preceding collections had largely disappeared, and was being replaced by new targets, many of those looking suspiciously like flappers and other embryonic societal icons of the newborn twenties. But, of course, everyone and everything was still fair game. Incomparably rich in humor and illustration, Punch was in its very first conception the notion of draftsman and wood-engraver Ebenezer Landells. Landells, having been inspired in part by the earlier English political-humor publications, Figaro in London, Punchinello, Punch in London and Comic Offering, but probably more by the contemporaneous (in 1841) Parisian periodical Charivari, which was more thoroughly illustrated than the early English publications, suggested to journalist Henry Mayhew that the time was probably right for something similar to Charivari in London. Mayhew agreed, and teamed with Mark Lemon and Joseph Stirling Coyne to establish Punch, which early on was quite politically radical. Though its spirit mellowed a bit over the years in favor of greater humor, its articles never really lost a satiric social/political/idealogical bite, and the long line of famed illustrators and cartoonists to participate in the publication may have been the most salient manifestation of that fact. As an interesting note: the name "Punch", for the cover character, which derived from the "Punch" mask in the Commedia del Arte, is derived from a term in the Neapolitan dialect, "polecenella", for a young male turkey with a hooked snout - like Punch's nose. Literally hours of entertainment, and, of course, a landmark relic. See scans. l-50n. Various (illustrator). …

Black endpapers. Small scale bumps at some corners, spine ens, and board edges; nothing else to point out. About Near Fine. See scans. A sharp, clean copy. This richly illustrated issue still carried much military humor stemming from its habit during World War I, but of course also displays the universal barbs at all targets great and small that Punch always has, and by now a six-month collection had well over five hundred pages of those, up from 400-odd pages during the war.
