The hardcover edition of 2003 states ''First Edition'' on the copyright page. The hardcover edtion is 184 pages, this is 136 pages. There is some content difference between the two books, though not a great deal. Each edition lists the same sections in the Contents: Natural History; Reclamation; Settlement and Development; and Place Names. This is both a natural history of the lake, and a local history of the settlement of the area around Eagle Lake in northern California. Black and white photos, many are period photographs. A fascinating history of Big Meadows and the Progressive Era in California. After the meadows had been secured by stealth and deception - including possible criminal acts - during the period 1900 - 1914 by Great Western Power Company (nee Western Power Company) and a few of its cronies, a dam was constructed and the meadows flooded. The resulting reservoir, Lake Almanor, drew nary a protest from conservationists of the time. Also includes interesting essays on early pioneers and families of the area.
