Dass Deutschland in den letzten Dekaden einen "Individualisierungsschub" erlebt habe, gilt vielen Sozialwissenschaftlern als Tatsache, die einen Erklärungshintergrund für vielerlei gesellschaftliche und politische Entwicklungen darstellt. Demnach seien hergebrachte Denk- und Verhaltensmuster geschwunden, die Menschen vorwiegend als Teil von grà Ãeren Sozialgefügen behandeln. An deren Stelle folgten die Menschen nun verstärkt solchen Mustern, die den Einzelnen in den Vordergrund des Denkens und Handelns rücken. Zugleich jedoch stellen Individualisierungsthesen für viele Kritiker Musterbeispiele für einen Mangel an theoretischer Schärfe und an eindeutigen empirischen Belegen dar. Während die meisten dieser Kritiker ihre Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema nach der Diagnose der Defizite beenden, unternimmt der Autor den Versuch, Individualisierungsthesen trotz der bekannten Probleme ernst zu nehmen: Markus Quandt formuliert ein analytisch greifbares Konzept von Individualisierung, entwickelt Vorschläge zur Messung unterschiedlicher Teilaspekte und unterzieht diese verschiedenen empirischen Tests. Diese Studie zeichnet sich durch mehrere Besonderheiten aus. Erstens werden Mà glichkeiten aufgezeigt, Individualisierungsbegriffe auf verschiedenen Ebenen an Theorien rationalen Verhaltens anzuschlieÃen. Zweitens wird Individualisierung - unter anderem - an ein Konzept des Individualismus als subjektives Einstellungsmuster geknüpft. Drittens wird für dieses Einstellungsmuster nicht nur ein Messkonzept entwickelt, sondern dieses Messinstrument kann auch mit Daten aus einer bevà lkerungsrepräsentativen Umfrage unterlegt werden. Viertens werden die Messeigenschaften des neuen Instrumentes mit einer Variante der "Rasch-Skalierung" analysiert, die in der Soziologie wenig bekannt, aber aus mehreren Gründen im vorliegenden Fall besonders geeignet ist. Fünftens wird erstmals Individualismus direkt als mà glicher Faktor in der Erklärung der politischen Teilnahme einbezogen. Dieses Anwendungsfeld ist nicht nur eines der wenigen, in denen tatsächlich recht klare Folgen eines vielleicht gewachsenen Individualismus zu erwarten sind, sondern auch von hoher gesellschaftlicher Bedeutung. Die Analysen ergeben freilich ein äuÃerst komplexes Bild. Danach kann selbst im Jahr 2002, nach mutmaÃlich einigen Jahrzehnten fortschreitender Individualisierung, nur bei einer kleinen Minderheit ein geschlossenes Einstellungsmuster des Individualismus identifiziert werden.
