Softcover. Condition: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. Paperback/ Taschenbuch, 186 S. Deutsche Erstausgabe. Ullstein-Tb. 21015.

See Parris's entry in the Oxford DNB. The subject of the letter is his work 'restoring' James Thornhill's paintings inside the dome of St Paul's Cathedral. Beginning in 1853 and ending three years later, Parris worked on scaffolding he had designed for the purpose thirty years before. His efforts were not well received: he was a…ccused of completely repainting Thornhill's work, to its detriment. 1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged and creased, with minor traces of mount adhering to the blank reverse. Folded twice. Having received the recipient's 'favor', he begins by sending his 'regards to Mr and Mrs Hall', i.e. Samuel Carter Hall (1800-1889), editor of the of the Art Journal and New Monthly Magazine, and his wife Anna Maria Hall (1800-1881). From the context of the letter it would appear that Duffane has requested information for an article for one of the two magazines of which Hall is editor. He is sending 'a very rough & hastily scrawl'd account of my apparatus &c at St Pauls, which You may perhaps distil something from'. He points out that the account he is sending 'is quite different from what has recently appear'd in the Times &c'. He feels that 'the shortest notice will be most advisable', but asks him to 'make what You please out of it'. The letter ends: 'I am at the Cathedral every day and shall be glad to shew You all particulars if you will enquire for me any time you are passing'.

Enlightenment ideas of science with revolutionary and Romantic themes in art, particularly showcasing the work of Swedish botanist and father of taxonomy Carl Linnaeus. Industrial discussion of hemp, cotton, and clay are interwoven with racy-sounding verse on methods of plant reproduction. He first voices the idea of evolution in both the plant and animal world in the 1793 first edit. of Part I, in one of his many digressions, found in a note for Curcumin, (Part I, Canto I, line 65); a remark for which many account the life's work on the Theory of Evolution by his grandson, Charles Darwin. (A poetic fascination with Gnomes in Part I may have had something to with the convivial nature of his various scientific and literary gatherings; he was apparently prone to gout and both the London Johnson bookstore soirees and meetings of the scientific Birmingham Lunar Society were quite liquacious in nature.) **COLLATION: Section I. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew, annexing the Islands in 1879. Perry's Narrative dwells on all aspects of Lew Chew life, with keen interest in their commerce and manufactured goods.

Tinted lithograph with added hand colour heightened with gum arabic, border with later ink rule, 15.1 x 23 cm, 19.8 x 26.2 cm (sheet), lower margin a little ragged, minor spotting to the margins, but in very good condition. A picturesque view of Macau from Penha hill, attractively coloured, prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrat…ive of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan." (1856). The text notes: "It was from Macao, in the days of its opulence, that many of the commercial expeditions of the Portuguese were dispatched to Japan; and at Macao, too, the church of Rome had one of its most powerful ecclesiastical establishments, sustained by the dread might of the inquisition, which, in former times, exercised in the east the full force of its dark and cruel discipline. Now, however, the opulence and enterprise of its merchants are gone, and the awful dominion of the haughty ecclesiastics and their bloody tribunal has lapsed into the weak hands of a few impoverished priests, who meekly appeal to the pity, and barely live upon the bounty, of the reduced Portuguese population. " (Vol. I, p. 299).
