From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication of the author for the I.C.T. collection. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text: Lucy Hutchinson has a long-established reputation as the biographer of her husband, Colonel John Hutchinson, the parliamentarian who defended Nottingham against the royalists in the English Civil War and who was subsequently one of the regicides Few readers know her translation of Lucretius: all six books of the De rerum natura in 7,800 lines of heroic couplets, quite possibly the first complete English version. She translated the poem, she explains in a prefatory letter to Lord Anglesey, "out of youthfull curiositie, to understand things I heard so much discourse of at second hand" (fol. 2v); most likely in the early 1650s, when English intellectuals, stimulated by Gassendi's work in France, began to be seriously interested in Lucretius and Epicureanism. - Wikipedia: Lucy Hutchinson (16181681) was an English translator, poet, and biographer, and the first person to translate the complete text of Lucretius's De rerum natura (On the Nature of Things) into English verse, during the years of the Interregnum (16491660).
