This book explores the financial strains on the Teutonic Order during the reign of Hochmeister Michael Küchmeister (1414â"1422), who sought to negotiate rather than wage war with Poland over disputed territories. The book examines the financial implications of these negotiations, diplomatic missions to papal courts, and papal mediation. The author reveals the Order's financial struggles as a significant factor in its decision-making and policies during this period. Through extensive research and analysis of archival sources, the book sheds light on the challenges faced by a medieval military order in the face of financial constraints and the complexities of international diplomacy. It sets the rise of the city-state against the broader history of Tuscany. The author argues that the growing power of Florence was facilitated by the skilled diplomacy and commercial prowess of its inhabitants. The formation of trade alliances and the minting of the gold florin, a currency that gained international standing, provided the financial basis for Florence's political aspirations. The text concludes that Florence's success was due in large part to the collaboration between its merchant class and the skilled workers who made up its powerful guilds. The book explores the complex political and religious landscape of the Low Countries during the Dutch Revolt, shedding light on William's efforts to balance the interests of different factions and forge a lasting peace. This book examines the ways medieval scribes and poets twisted the true legacy of Theodoric the Great, the Ostrogothic ruler of Italy, to serve their own purposes. Upon his death in 526, Theodoric was a revered historic figure, praised by contemporaries for his wisdom and governance. Over time, however, negative assessments and criticisms of Theodoric's rule took hold, influenced largely by religious and political tensions. By the Middle Ages, the image of Theodoric had been transformed into that of a cruel tyrant and heretic. The author traces the development of this negative portrayal through medieval chronicles, poetry, and other sources, demonstrating how Theodoric's reputation was distorted to align with the prevailing orthodox Christian narrative. Through this analysis, the book sheds light on the ways history can be manipulated to suit political and religious agendas, and it offers a glimpse into the complex interplay between historical fact and myth-making. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Halflinnen hardcover binding with title pasted in plastic on the spine "L Quidde Caligula". 22 x 14 cm. Former owner in the back: Ir. A. van Noortwijk Sr. Irenelaan 15 Ermelo.Original edition in German: Caligula. Eine Studie über römischen Cäsereenwahnsinn, Leipzig 1894. Ludwig Quidde is a writer, historian and winner of the Nobel price. The German monarchist accused him however of attacking the German emperor Wilhelm II. A series of attacks followed. Later the question raised whether Quidde was the real author of this publication. It was said that the author was an obscure clerk in the office of the gymnasium director by the name of Quaddler, who stole the material from the director. Uncertain if this is true though.Bound together with:1) Sociale Politiek, haar beginselen en haar uitgangspunt door P.A.
