Quintilian was a Roman rhetorician, who set up a public school of rhetoric, and didn't retire from teaching until he was eighty-eight. 'Institutio Oratoria' is his only surviving work, and deals with the theory and practice of rhetoric. The work is divided into twelve sections, and also looks at the foundational education and development of the author. Quintilian believed that a the perfect orator was firstly a good man, and secondly a good speaker. Quintilian outlived many Roman Emperors, and was hired by Domitian to be the tutor to his family. His work throughout his live was a major contribution to educational theory and literary criticism. This work was the result of his wide practical experience as a teacher. Translated into English by W. Guthrie. Rebound in a cloth binding. Externally, smart. Very minor bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound.
