Auf einer Fläche von fast 900.000 km siedeln hier 45 Millionen Menschen, von denen 70-80 % dem ukrainischen Volkstum… angehören. - Wenn wir danach fragen, wie es kommt, daß dieses große Volk sich der Nachbar nicht erwehren konnte und immer wieder von Russen, Polen und anderen Nachbarvölkern aufgeteilt und zerrissen wurde, so liegt der Grund nicht in der natürlichen Schwäche, sondern in dem schweren geschichtlichen Los dieses Landes. Durch das ganze frühe Mittelalter hindurch war dieses Gebiet (die Nordküste des Schwarzen Meeres mit ihren Steppen) Durchzugsland der Völker aus Zentralasien. Durch die Ukraine zogen raubend und plündernd Hunnen, Awaren, Kumanen und andere Steppenvölker bis hin zu dem schrecklichen Mongolensturm von 1240, der das blühende, reiche Land in eine Wüste verwandelte. Damals erlitt das ukrainische Volk, das ein Opfer der Tataren wurde, einen starken Aderlass; sofern es nicht in die Sklaverei verschleppt wurde oder durch das Schwert umkam, ist es zersprengt worden und hat sich als langsam wieder sammeln können. - Die Mongolen waren zwar durch Herzog Heinrich von Breslau bei Liegnitz zur Umkehr gezwungen worden und hatten Mitteleuropa nicht mehr erreicht; sie ließen sich aber an der Wolga und in der Krim nieder und bedrohten von dort durch ihre Raubzüge jahrhundertelang das ukrainische Land. Daher kam es, daß die Ukraine auf der linken Uferseite des Dnjepr Jahrhunderte lang menschenleer blieb.
