Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near fine. Limited Edition. One of 200 (in actuality 75) copies, small quarto size, 94 pp., with prospectus. Francois Rabelais' (ca. 1493-1553) satirical novels of the life of two giants, Gargantua and Pantagruel, have captivated the hearts and minds of many since their publication. As Mr. van Patten puts forth in the book's prospectus, "[t]he wisest and most ingenious commentators upon the works of Rabelais have failed to understand the section (II, chapter 7) which relates to the remarkable books which Pantagruel found in the Bibliothèque de l'Abbaye de St.-Victor. The catalogue of these books has remained one of the outstanding mysteries in bibliography and literary history. "The catalogue, at first glance, does seem exceedingly dull and particularly so since it occurs in a text which is far from dull, as all the readers of Rabelais know. It has been obvious that Rabelais intended something more than to provide a list of titles without meaning or purpose, but what? Scholars have tried to interpret these titles but the results of their collective efforts have not been notably successful. Mr. Klinefelter has now changed all this. "In one of the most beautiful books yet printed at the Grabhorn Press, Mr. Klinefelter provides a scholarly preface, the original French titles as they appear in the catalogue, English translations of each title, and an admirable text which clearly reveals why Rabelais devised these titles and why his creature, Pantagruel, was intrigued by them." Issued in an edition of only 200 copies, however, per the bibliography, "[a]pproximately 125 copies were destroyed by fire at the publishers", which accounts for the fact that as of this writing we see only a sole other copy online. The volume was included in the Exhibition of Western Books (Rounce & Coffin Club). ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in green paper over boards with a tapestry cloth shelfback, green paper spine label stamped in gold, fore- and bottom edges uncut, the endpapers (and all pages) ruled in brown, title and text printed in red and black throughout, title and divisional title pages with large fleur-de-lys decoration in red, title repeated in margins throughout in brown, colophon with printer's device [B, without borders or printer's initials] in red; Garamond monotype and handset Deepdene text, handset Gothique Ancienne, printed on mold-made paper, binding small quarto size (10 1/4" by 7 3/4"), pagination: [i-ii] iii-x [1] 2-83 [1, colophon]. Prospectus a single sheet folded once to four pages, first page with the same large red fleur-de-lys decoration, second page blank, third and fourth pages with standard prospectus information; measures 9 3/4" by 7 5/8". ___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, the boards clean, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some dustiness to the text block and board edges, else fine. The prospectus also near fine, without folds or wear, with similar light dustiness to the top and fore-edge. ___CITATION: Grabhorn Press Bibliography, no. 523. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note the following: (i) additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs, please inquire for details; and (ii) any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
