Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator). First Thus. Sir Thomas Malory's original tales of King Arthur & the Knights of the Round Table are brought to life in this edition that was first published by MacMillan in 1920; this new edition from Barnes & Noble from 1994 contains all the stories along with the stunning pen-and-ink illustrations of Arthur Rackham, including a center section of 8 full-color plates, + numerous other pen-and-ink sketches throughout text, in 517 pages with Glossary in rear. With rich navy cloth-covered boards, stamped with bright gilt lettering to spine, this octavo (6.25" x 8.25") is in Near Fine condition: as bright & clean & crisp as Brand New, but marred by 1) a slight ding (with cloth loss) to rear board along fore edge side, & 2) a red "final" stamp to outside top edge of text block. Else, pages creamy white & unmarked, margins on all plates bright 7 clean. The unclipped DJ is VG+, with paper loss along back cover-flap interface in the same place as the ding on the book. Else, bright & colorful with no wear; protected in clear mylar cover, which is nicked at lower spine. Latimore & Haskell, p. 47. âLeather with a hint of soiling and very minor wear (corners slightly rubbed, a couple--perhaps naturally occurring--abrasions on the back cover), otherwise an especially fine copy. This is a lovely copy of the deluxe American edition on Large Paper of Arthur Rackham's take on the Arthurian legends. While Rackham did illustrations for a great many books, Houfe observes that he concentrated "particularly [on] those of a mystical, magic, or legendary background," like the present work. Rackham (1867-1939) studied art at Lambeth School, where the work of his fellow student Charles Ricketts influenced his development. Houfe tells us that soon after Rackham joined the staff of "The Westminster Budget" in 1892, he "established himself as one of the foremost Edwardian illustrators and was triumphant in the early 1900s when color printing first enabled him to use subtle tints and muted tones to represent age and timelessness." Being bound in white leather, the present item is very difficult to find as clean as it appears here. No. 180 OF 250 COPIES OF THE AMERICAN LARGE PAPER EDITION.
